The short answer

Most outdoor grill problems come down to ignition parts, clogged or corroded burners, gas valves, or regulator and supply issues, and nearly all of them are repairable. Our technician tests the gas path, ignition and burners, explains the fault and your options, and then makes the repair, often on the same visit if the part is available.

A built-in outdoor grill usually anchors the whole backyard kitchen. When it stops lighting, cooks unevenly, or the flame looks wrong, you want a clear diagnosis rather than guesswork. Sub-Zero Service Center repairs premium outdoor kitchens for homeowners in Wilmington, Harbor City, San Pedro, Carson, Torrance, Long Beach and the surrounding area. We work on Wolf and Viking outdoor gas grills, and we service the appliances that tend to sit beside them, such as Sub-Zero outdoor refrigeration. We also handle the indoor kitchen, including Thermador ranges and cooktops. We are an independent repair company, not affiliated with or endorsed by any manufacturer. Our job is to find what failed, explain it plainly, and fix it so the grill is safe and works the way it should.

Issues we fix

These are the problems homeowners most often call us about. If you smell gas at any point, turn off the supply at the tank or the shutoff valve, keep flames away, and contact your gas utility before you call for repair.

  • Burners that won't ignite, or an igniter that clicks without lighting
  • Igniter that doesn't click at all, often a dead battery, a failed spark module or a damaged wire
  • Uneven heat across the grates, with hot and cold zones
  • Low flame or a grill that won't get up to searing temperature
  • Yellow, lazy or sputtering flames instead of a steady blue flame
  • Flames that go out on their own or flare back near the control knobs
  • Infrared sear or rear rotisserie burner not lighting or not glowing evenly
  • Rotisserie motor not turning
  • Control knobs that are stiff, loose or won't turn
  • Grill lights or illuminated knobs not working
  • Gas odor around the grill head or under the cabinet
  • Rust or corrosion on burners, heat shields and internal parts

What our technician checks on a built-in grill

A professional-style grill is a gas appliance first, so we start with the supply. We confirm the gas type matches the grill's setup, natural gas or propane, then check the regulator, the flex line and the connections for leaks and proper pressure. A weak or failing regulator is a common reason a grill runs low and won't sear.

From there we work through ignition. We test the spark module, igniter electrodes, wiring and the power source, whether battery or hardwired. Next we pull and inspect the burners, venturi tubes and burner ports. Spiders and insects like to nest in venturi tubes, and the resulting blockage causes yellow flames, flashback and uneven heat. We also check valves and orifices, flame tamers, heat shields and drip trays.

Wilmington and the nearby harbor-area cities sit close to the coast, where salty, damp air speeds up corrosion on burners and fasteners. Fall Santa Ana winds bring hot, dry spells and blow dust and debris into the grill. We look for both kinds of wear while we are inside the unit.

How the brands differ in what tends to fail

Wolf outdoor gas grills are heavy stainless units built around high-output burners. Many models include an infrared rear rotisserie burner and an optional infrared sear zone. On these grills we often see ignition issues tied to the spark system or electrode positioning. Infrared burners can also lose even glow when the ceramic surface is cracked, wet or fouled with grease.

Viking outdoor grills share many of the same failure points: igniters, valves, regulators and burners. They also add their own mix of infrared searing burners, rotisserie systems and lighted controls. Older units that have been outdoors a long time tend to show burner corrosion and stiff valves first.

Sub-Zero doesn't make the grill itself, but its outdoor refrigerators and refrigerator drawers are common partners in the same outdoor kitchen, so we can check them during the visit. Thermador is mainly known for indoor cooking, and we service its ranges, rangetops and cooktops when you need help inside as well. Whatever the brand, we work from the model and serial number so the parts and procedures match your exact unit.

Repair or replace a high-end grill?

In most cases, repair makes sense. A premium built-in grill has a heavy stainless body and a cutout sized to your outdoor cabinetry. Most failures happen in replaceable parts such as igniters, burners, valves and regulators. Replacing the whole grill can also mean refitting the island if a new model's dimensions differ.

Replacement is worth discussing when the firebox or grill body has rusted through, when several major parts are failing at once, or when parts for an older model are no longer available. We'll tell you what we find and give you an honest view of whether the repair is a sensible investment. The decision is yours.

What affects the cost of repair

We don't quote prices before we've seen the grill, because the cost depends on what's actually wrong. The main factors are the fault itself, the parts needed, and how much work it takes to reach them.

A simple ignition fix is a different job than replacing a manifold or several corroded burners. Brand-specific parts vary in cost and availability. Access matters too. Grills set deep into masonry or custom islands, or units with tight cabinet clearances, can take extra time to pull or work on safely. We explain each of these before any work begins.

How a service visit works

When you contact us, tell us the brand, the model if you have it, and what the grill is doing. We'll set up a visit at your Wilmington-area home. Our technician inspects and tests the grill, confirms the cause, and walks you through the repair and your options.

Once you approve the work, we make the repair. If we carry the part, that's often the same day. If a brand-specific part has to be ordered, we schedule a return visit. Before we leave, we leak-test the connections we've worked on and light every burner to confirm a steady, even flame.

What to expect

How a visit goes

  1. Find the cause first

A warm refrigerator or a burner that won't light can have several possible causes. We test before we replace parts, so the repair addresses the actual problem instead of a guess.

  2. Explain it in plain terms

You'll hear what failed, why it matters, and what fixing it involves. If a repair doesn't make sense for an older unit, we'll tell you that too.

  3. Respect your kitchen

Built-in appliances sit inside custom cabinetry and finished floors. We take care when pulling units out, protect the surrounding surfaces, and leave the space the way we found it.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question? Call (213) 296-1898 and we’ll talk it through.

Why does my grill click but not light?

Usually the spark is reaching the burner but gas isn't arriving at the right mix. Common causes are a blocked burner port or venturi tube, a misaligned igniter electrode, or low gas pressure from the regulator or supply. We test each of these to find the cause.

Why are my grill flames yellow instead of blue?

Yellow flames usually mean too little air is mixing with the gas. Insects or debris in the venturi tubes are a common culprit, along with dirty burners or an air shutter that needs adjusting. Yellow, sooty flames should be checked, because they can also lead to flashback.

Do you repair Wolf and Viking outdoor grills?

Yes. We repair Wolf and Viking outdoor gas grills, and we service Sub-Zero outdoor refrigeration in the same outdoor kitchen. We also work on Thermador cooking appliances indoors. We are independent and not affiliated with any of these brands.

Can you repair a grill without removing it from the island?

Many repairs, such as igniters, burners and valves, can be done with the grill in place. Some jobs need the grill pulled partway out of the cutout. We'll tell you what your repair requires before we start.

Does living near the coast affect my grill?

Yes. Salty, humid coastal air speeds up corrosion on burners, heat shields and fasteners. Covering the grill when it's not in use and cleaning it regularly help, and we look for corrosion damage during every visit.

Can you convert my grill from propane to natural gas?

It depends on the model. Some grills accept a manufacturer conversion kit with the matching orifices and regulator, and others don't. Share your model number and we'll tell you whether a conversion is possible for your unit.

Tell us what your appliance is doing

Describe the problem and share the brand and model if you have it. We'll set up a visit to diagnose your Sub-Zero, Viking, Wolf, or Thermador appliance and explain your options before any repair begins.
