The short answer

If your Wolf, Viking or Thermador range has burners that won't ignite, an oven that heats unevenly, or error codes, it can usually be repaired rather than replaced. Our technician tests the ignition, gas, heating and control systems on site and explains the fault and your options before any work begins.

A high-end range does a lot of work in a home kitchen. When a burner won't light, the oven runs cold, or the display throws an error, you need someone who understands how professional-style ranges are built. Sub-Zero Service Center repairs gas, dual-fuel and electric ranges for homeowners in Wilmington and nearby cities, including San Pedro, Harbor City, Carson, Lomita and Long Beach. Many of our customers have a Sub-Zero refrigerator paired with a Wolf range, which is Sub-Zero's sister brand for cooking. We also work on Viking and Thermador ranges. We are an independent repair company and are not affiliated with any of these brands. Below you'll find the problems we fix, what a technician checks, how the brands differ, and what to expect from a visit.

Issues we fix

Most range problems fall into a few groups: ignition, gas flow, oven heating and electronic controls. Here are the symptoms homeowners describe most often when they call us.

  • Burners that won't ignite, or light only after several tries
  • Igniters that keep clicking after the flame is lit
  • Weak, yellow or uneven burner flames
  • Low simmer settings that go out or run too hot
  • Oven that won't heat, heats slowly or misses the set temperature
  • Uneven baking, with one side or rack browning faster
  • Convection fan that is noisy or doesn't turn on
  • Broiler that won't light or won't stay lit
  • Error codes, blank displays or unresponsive touch controls
  • Oven door that won't seal, or a self-clean lock that stays engaged
  • Smell of gas when the range is off (shut off the gas supply and call your gas utility first)

What our technician checks on a built-in or professional-style range

Professional-style ranges have more parts than a standard range: more burners, larger oven cavities and, on dual-fuel models, a gas cooktop paired with an electric oven. We test systematically instead of guessing at parts.

On the cooktop, we inspect the burner heads, caps and ports for blockage, test each igniter and the spark module, check the switches behind the knobs, and confirm gas pressure at the regulator. Moisture from boil-overs or cleaning is a common reason burners click without lighting, so we look for that early.

In the oven, we test the bake and broil elements or gas igniters, the temperature sensor, the convection fan motor and the door gasket. We check the control board, wiring harnesses and connections for heat damage, which matters in ranges that sit tight against cabinets. We also confirm the range is level and properly vented, since both affect how evenly it cooks.

How Wolf, Viking and Thermador ranges differ

Each brand builds ranges differently, so the parts that wear out are not the same. Wolf ranges, made by the same company as Sub-Zero refrigeration, use dual-stacked sealed burners that provide both high heat and a very low simmer. When those burners act up, the cause is often the igniter, a spark switch or debris in the burner ports. On Wolf dual-fuel models, oven complaints usually involve the temperature sensor, elements or control board.

Viking professional ranges are heavy-duty and frequently gas throughout. Service calls tend to involve igniters, spark modules, oven gas valves and the parts in a hard-working broiler. Some older Viking models also need attention to door hinges and gaskets.

Thermador ranges use star-shaped burners and an extra-low simmer feature that cycles the flame. When simmer stops working correctly, we look at the burner control and related components. Their electronic oven controls and convection systems can also show error codes that point us toward a sensor, fan or board.

Whatever the brand, we identify the exact model and serial number so the parts match your unit.

Repair or replace a high-end range?

In most cases, repairing a premium range makes more sense than replacing it. These ranges are built with heavy frames, durable cooktops and replaceable components. A failed igniter, sensor or element doesn't mean the range is worn out.

Replacement is worth discussing when the oven cavity or burner box is badly corroded, when several major components have failed at once, or when parts for an older model are no longer available. Changing size or fuel type can also mean modifying cabinets, countertops, gas lines or electrical service. We'll give you an honest assessment of your range's condition so you can decide.

What affects the cost of range repair

We can't quote a cost before we diagnose the problem, but we can explain what drives it. The biggest factor is the fault. Cleaning a burner or replacing an igniter is a smaller job than replacing a control board or an oven gas valve.

Parts are the second factor. Premium brands use specific components, and some are more expensive or take longer to get than others. Access is the third. A freestanding range pulls out easily. A range set into custom cabinetry, under a heavy hood or against stone backsplashes takes more care to move and protect. We explain the diagnosis and the repair before doing any work, so you can approve it first.

How a range repair visit works

When you contact us, we'll ask for the brand, the model if you have it, and what the range is doing. That helps the technician plan which tools and common parts to bring.

At the visit, the technician protects your floors and cabinetry, confirms the symptom, and runs the tests described above. You'll get a plain explanation of what failed and what the repair involves. If the part is on the truck, we can often finish the same day. If it has to be ordered, we schedule a return visit to install it.

After the repair, we test every burner, the oven, broiler and convection functions, and any controls involved, so you can see the range working before we leave.

What to expect

How a visit goes

  1. Find the cause first

A warm refrigerator or a burner that won't light can have several possible causes. We test before we replace parts, so the repair addresses the actual problem instead of a guess.

  2. Explain it in plain terms

You'll hear what failed, why it matters, and what fixing it involves. If a repair doesn't make sense for an older unit, we'll tell you that too.

  3. Respect your kitchen

Built-in appliances sit inside custom cabinetry and finished floors. We take care when pulling units out, protect the surrounding surfaces, and leave the space the way we found it.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question? Call (213) 296-1898 and we’ll talk it through.

Does Sub-Zero make ranges?

Sub-Zero focuses on refrigeration. Its sister brand, Wolf, makes the ranges, cooktops and ovens often paired with Sub-Zero refrigerators. We repair Wolf ranges along with Viking and Thermador.

Why do my range burners keep clicking?

Constant clicking usually comes from moisture or food residue near the igniter, a misaligned burner cap, or a faulty spark switch or module. If drying the burner area doesn't fix it, a technician can test those parts.

My oven temperature is off. Is that a repair or just a calibration?

It can be either. Some ranges allow a temperature offset, but if the oven is far off or inconsistent, a temperature sensor, element, igniter or control board may be failing. We test these to find the cause.

Can you repair a range installed in custom cabinetry?

Yes. We take care when sliding a built-in range out and protect surrounding cabinets, counters and floors. Tight installations may take more time, which we'll mention when we explain the repair.

What should I do if I smell gas near my range?

Turn off the range, avoid using switches or flames, open windows, shut off the gas supply if you can do so safely, leave the home, and contact your gas utility or emergency services. Once the area is safe, we can inspect and repair the range.

Are you an authorized Wolf, Viking or Thermador service provider?

No. Sub-Zero Service Center is an independent repair company and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Sub-Zero, Wolf, Viking or Thermador. We specialize in repairing these premium brands.
